Spotlight On... Pablo Solari

Exciting 22-year-old Argentine winger Pablo Solari (DOB 22/03/2001) is subject to interest from LA Galaxy, with a proposed $10 million bid in the reckoning. We first analysed Solari in April 2022 during his spell at Colo-Colo in the Chilean Primera División before making a noteworthy move to River Plate later that year. He has now amassed 66 appearances for River Plate, impressively finding the back of the net 22 times.

Beyond his club endeavors, Solari has left his mark on the international stage, representing Argentina at the U16 and U18 levels. His experiences with the national youth teams have contributed to his growth and development as a promising player, ready to make his mark on the world stage. As speculations circulate, we decided to conduct thorough analysis on the wing wizard to assess whether or not a move to the MLS would be appropriate at this stage of his career.

Here was our initial assessment from one of our Player Analysts:

Direct, out and out winger from Argentina. One of his side’s most significant threats over the course of the game, he provided the assist for his side’s consolation goal in the final few moments with a well-placed cross from the right. At his best when he has a yard or two with the ball at feet to attack a full back 1v1 in wide areas

Combination play was a little loose at times but he makes good decisions and combine effectively in the final third, he just needs to become more consistent. Suits a system where he is allowed opportunities to attack 1v1 in wide areas but also has the capacity to be a threat in transition where he has space in behind to threaten. Really needs to improve his defensive work, recovery runs are slow and frequently fails to track his runner. Some positive signs against strong opposition, worth monitoring.

As we have monitored Solari's development over recent months, we see a similar pattern emerge, however, we now see him performing more consistently at a higher level including some impressive performances in the Copa Libertadores.

Player Analysis

We see a similar pattern emerging here straight away. He is an excellent dribbler, accelerates well, has a very good top speed, wants to drive at players, crosses and offers a goal threat. Unsurprisingly, his defensive output is poor, particularly his defensive transitions - something future suitors must be acutely aware of.

Our position suitability index again, evidences Solari's capability as an out and out winger. He is surprisingly adept in the other categories, notably as an inside forward based on his ability to create for himself and others but it's clear that if LA Galaxy were to make a move, they would be getting an out and out right footed winger.

Data Analysis

We compared Solari's data to similar players in his league and again, saw a similar pattern. He is a real goal threat, one of the best in the Argentina Primera División with an xG of 4.6 which he slightly outperformed last season. He scores every 247 minutes from an average of 2 shots per game.

Staying with chance creation, his xA of 2.89 was strong in the data set but he hugely outscored this with 7 assists in the season, proving that Solari can create chances for others which other players in his league aren't capable of - an encouraging sign.

Unsurprisingly, we see low scores for Tackles and Interceptions - some of the lowest in the data set.

We can see this clearly here when compared to similar players in his league (note De la Vega who has recently moved to Seattle Sounders in the MLS). Solari maxes out for xG, Shots per Game, xA and Key Passes per Game but is nowhere to be seen for Interceptions, Tackles and Possession Lost. This shows really high congruence with our player analysis.

Conclusively, Solari is an exciting, out and out winger who contributed significantly to River Plate's record 38th title with 5 goals and 7 assists. You can rely on him to beat players in wide areas and deliver high quality crosses but don't count on him to sprint back and win the ball if the opposition keeper catches one of his wayward crosses.

Conclusion

Based on statistical analysis, LA Galaxy do not attack well down the right side and Solari may be the perfect option to bolster their attacking output down the right. We believe that Solari may have the opportunity to further elevate his career with a potential move to Europe in the upcoming summer transfer window with the following clubs as potential locations based upon a strong statistical alignment: Everton, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa in the Premier League, Celta Vigo, Girona and Valencia in La Liga and Genk, Union San Gilloise and Sporting Charleroi in the Jupiler Pro League.

Either way, our Player Analyst's initial assessment is spot on - Worth monitoring based on some positive signs. Solari is currently performing well at the CONMEBOL Pre-Olympic Tournament for Argentina and we look forward to monitoring his performance closely over the coming months. A move to the MLS and LA Galaxy would be a good move at this point in his career but if he holds his nerve and keeps performing to a high level, a more illustrious move in the summer could well be on the cards.
